Avalanche Level 1 Course 

The AIARE level 1 avalanche course provides a complete, hands-on introduction to the avalanche phenomenon combining both classroom and field sessions. With a methodical learning process and practical lessons, students achieve a thorough knowledge base for critical decision making. Core topics are terrain recognition, tour planning, observation techniques, decision making, human factor, rescue techniques. 

2 evenings, 2 full days (24 hours) $315 per person; includes field book, up-do-date course booklet, additional hand outs, a $20 voucher towards refresher course, certificate of completion.  

 

Avalanche Level 2 Course 

 

The AIARE level 2 avalanche course is designed for those seeking to further improve their avalanche safety skills and decision making competence. At the core of this course is the development of a deeper understanding of snow metamorphism, snow stability factors and observation standards. The level 2 builds from the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the level 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical factors leading to advanced decision making skills. 

40 hours over 4 full days (Thursday-Sunday or 2 consecutive weekends) $395 per person; includes SWAG manual, up-to-date course booklet, additional hand outs, a $20 voucher towards refresher course, certificate of completion.  

 

Avalanche Rescue 

Our Rescue clinic refines your technique to prepare you for the worst: avalanche and burial. Learn and refresh your companion rescue skills during this one-day field intensive and you’ll have the necessary skills to locate and dig up a fellow backcountry traveler, should he or she be the victim of an avalanche. We cover the latest techniques of beacon searches, probing and effective extraction, how to time-effectively organize a group as well as evacuation with a field rescue-sled. 1 field day ($80 per person).

 

Backcountry Refresher Course 

This is the ideal tune-up for those with previous backcountry experience or as a follow-up to the level 1 and 2 avalanche courses. This course is aimed at keeping level 1 and 2 course graduates updated and providing feedback about critical decision making. Participants review their understanding and handling of avalanche risk management and practice their skill and knowledge in decision making during a backcountry day tour under professional tutelage. Working step by step through the decision making process with the group and a professional ski and mountain guide will increase your confidence in your own ability to make the right choices when traveling in avalanche terrain. The topics include tour planning, navigation, track setting, terrain selection and group management.
